The responsibilities of this department include:

  • Keeping the minutes of County Commission meetings
  • Marriage licenses
  • Qualifying Notary Publics
  • Applying for titles on motor vehicles
  • Selling license plates for motor vehicles
  • Collecting sales tax on non-dealer sales of motor vehicles
  • Collecting sales tax on boats from non-dealer transfers
  • Business licensing- This application may be used anywhere in the state of Tennessee. The Madison County fee is $15.00. Before submitting an application for a Madison County Business License, please purchase and include any applicable city licensure. If the business is county only and home-based/online only, please submit a Home-Based Business Request with the Building Department and include paperwork with application.

The Clerk's Office is also responsible for maintaining the County Commission minutes for all County Commission meetings. The public can access minutes through the website or the County Court Clerk's office.
